Home security isn't merely about high tech home alarm systems. It's about keeping everyone in your family safe and secure even from the smallest mishap. As you probably know, homes can be minefields for babies and small children-well, the same goes for the elderly. Older members of your family require the same care and protection that you'd give to your child. Taking preventative measures to ensure the safety of elderly family members requires some careful planning and forethought.
Senior citizens obviously do not want to be restrained or treated as if they were unable to care for themselves. They cherish their freedom and their sense of independence. As with everyone else in this world, they wish to live their lives in a dignified manner. However, assessing your home security with older people in mind, does require that you be firm yet flexible.
Footstools And Ottomans
Your older family members may not think that any environmental changes need to be made; a coffee table to them may seem harmless, a delicate shelf, may seem sturdy, a stairwell may look like the safest stairwell ever-but in truth, all these can present dangers. So, despite any resistance or stubbornness you may encounter, stick to your guns and elder proof your home. Be gentle and non-condescending about the matter. Do not patronize, as this could be taken as a sign of mistrust and lack of confidence.
When elder proofing, start by removing any obvious tripping hazards; as many older people tend to take medications for health problems, they may suffer from dizziness, drowsiness and instability and may be subject to frequent falls.
Remove any rugs or throw rugs that are not secured to the floor. Get rid of or move low standing furniture such as ottomans and coffee tables. Any stray objects or superfluous decorations such as baskets or footstools should be stored away.
Rooms should be well lit and you should consider installing light switches in easily accessible spots. Illuminated switches are even better. Stairways should have railings for easier climbing. The bathroom area requires special attention. Purchase slip-proof matting for the bathtub floor. Install grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet. Other hazards that may not set off a home alarm, but that definitely set off your own internal alarm are linoleum floors and ceramic tiles. These are prone to slipperiness. A good alternative is pile carpeting-it's not too thick to induce falls, yet it's also soft enough to break any falls.
The kitchen as with the bathroom, warrants careful consideration. Get rid of stools and make sure everything is within easy reach. Take care to dispose of outdated food items.
Locks on doors are equally important. Elder people suffering from dementia may wander and get lost for days. Balconies and sliding doors should be secured.
Contingency plans for emergencies need to be made, especially if your loved one requires a walker or wheel chair. If your house has a home security alarm system, do be sure that it functions properly and that it can be disabled and enabled with ease. Home security systems with remote access may be useful, should an emergency occur, as elderly people may not be able to reach the phone.
Keep in mind that accidents do happen, but many can be prevented.
